Three people are facing charges after human remains — including severed legs wrapped in a tarp — were found in two locations in Trotwood nearly a year ago.

Investigators were able to identify the remains as 75-year-old Edgar Keiter Sr., of Kettering, due to a serial number on a knee replacement. Since then, Keiter Sr.’s son, grandson and his son’s girlfriend have all been allegedly connected to his death.

After months of investigating, here’s where the case stands and what accusations people are facing.

What happened?

On April 22, Trotwood police responded to the 7500 block of Old Dayton Road after a man reported finding human legs at the end of his driveway.

When officers arrived, they found legs wrapped in a white tarp, according to an incident report.

Once the remains were identified as Keiter Sr., Trotwood and Kettering police went to his Croftshire Drive apartment in Kettering. Crews reportedly discovered appliances and carpet were removed from the unit.

Investigators spoke to neighbors who said Edgar S. Keiter Jr. cleaned out his father’s apartment the previous week and had been seen driving his father’s vehicle, according to Kettering Municipal Court records.

Keiter Jr. was arrested at his Dayton residence on May 1. He was charged with two counts of theft in Kettering Municipal Court for the items stolen from his father’s apartment.

Crews found the rest of Keiter Sr.’s remains in a storage unit on Guenther Road in Trotwood. The person renting the storage unit reportedly told investigators Keiter Jr. asked them to reserve it in their name.

The stolen items from Keiter Sr.’s apartment were found in a garage behind Keiter Jr.’s apartment, according to Kettering police.

Who is facing charges?

Edgar Keiter Jr.

Keiter Jr. was indicted on three counts of tampering with evidence, two counts of theft and one count of gross abuse of a corpse on May 10.

Detectives continued to investigate Keiter Sr.’s death and additional evidence showed Keiter Jr. was responsible for his murder, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

A grand jury indicted him on 28 additional charges on Jan. 22, including murder, aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, felonious assault, grand theft of motor vehicle, grand theft from an elderly or disabled victim, theft from an elderly or disabled victim, complicity to commit grand theft, complicity to commit forgery, complicity to commit theft and misuse of credit cards.

Keiter Jr. is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges on Jan. 30.

Tygan Keiter

Keiter Jr.’s son, 23-year-old Tygan Keiter, was accused of sending text messages and making calls from Keiter Sr.’s cellphone.

During an interview with a detective in July, Tygan Keiter said he had conversations with Keiter Jr. prior to Keiter Sr.’s death about trying to make Keiter Sr. put Tygan Keiter on his will, according to Kettering Municipal Court records.

After his grandfather’s death, Keiter Jr. reportedly told Tygan Keiter to go to the Croftshire Drive apartment and stage text messages from Keiter Sr.’s phone to make it look like he was still alive.

“Tygan admitted to going to Keiter Sr.’s house and seeing Keiter Sr. dead on the floor with a knife through his chest,” an affidavit read. “Tygan admitted to sending text messages from Keiter Sr.’s phone and making calls from the phone.”

Tygan Keiter was initially indicted on four counts of tampering with evidence in July.

In November, he pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with evidence and one count of misdemeanor theft. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 25.

Amanda Reiff

Amanda Reiff, Keiter Jr.’s girlfriend, was reportedly in the storage unit where some Keiter Sr.’s remains were discovered.

She was charged with one count each of complicity to commit tampering with evidence and complicity to commit gross abuse of a corpse.

She’s accused of telling a witness Keiter Jr. put his father’s remains in a storage unit.

“The defendant also (told) the witness that she might have to help get rid of the body due to the odor and (Keiter) Jr. was in jail at the time,” according to Kettering Municipal Court documents.

She was allegedly seen in the storage unit with Keiter Jr. while Keiter Sr.’s body was being moved and stored.

Reiff pleaded guilty to complicity to commit tampering with evidence, complicity to commit gross abuse of a corpse, misuse of credit cards and two counts of forgery in December, according to Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records.

Her sentencing is scheduled for March 4.
